“Exercise: Creating Stories in the Story Spine Now that you’ve got a good understanding of the Story Spine, try making up some of your own. You can do this by yourself, just adding each step after the last, or you can do it with a group. Sit in a circle. The first person will start with “Once upon a time . . .” then each other person in turn will add the next line that they feel follows. Don’t think too much, and don’t worry about getting it right. The first thing that comes to your mind is absolutely perfect. Do this several times, and you will start to see the instincts that the others in your group have: who likes a lot of action? Who likes happy endings? Who likes things to get worse? Who likes mysterious and supernatural turns? It’s a great way to check in with each other.”
