The improv structures listed here allow an improv ensemble to keep generating improvisational content from a very few ask fors. Long form is a style of improvisation that bases its entertainment on very few and possibly a single ask for from the audience. Because it involves the audience less, long form relies more heavily on acting skills and ensemble memory, that can entertain for an entire 45 minute set. Short form improvisation calls out to the audience many times throughout the evening and the scenes done are simply shorter. Short form improvisation can be very entertaining even when the improvisers do not have a deep acting skill set.

Both forms require a constant and pleasant flow. Both forms need a mechanism in place to relieve the audience of the excruciating pain of a scene that is not working. Both forms benefit from practise, acting training, direction and professional presentation on all levels.
