Things I Like & Things that Resonated
- I like taking time at the start of a scene. Using silence, body language and facial expressions to do the heavy lifting before jumping in with a pre planned premise.
- I like the idea of “never starting scenes until eye contact has been made.” That feels like it should be non-negotiable.
- Dave said he isn’t going to do Southern Farmers (or something like that). I could do with varying my voice more and getting better at playing other characters, but they seem to play themselves for the most part.
- On the above, the way they were each able to slide into every character was so impressive.
- I like that what they do is character driven not premise drive. Sometimes if feels like you can get bulldozed by someone’s premise.
- While I don’t think we should take suggestions, it did make me think about how much I dislike using monologues. And since they are really aimed at finding premise/game, that may another reason to scrap them.
- Random thought. Sometimes, when doing a scene, I have a sense of where it needs to go, but it feels like what the scene partner says, takes it in a different direction. The scene I did with Michaela at the workshop. I knew it was about kids. And it wasn’t anything about what Michaela said that made me go off an list all the pets we couldn’t have…I couldn’t figure out in the moment how to make it about our struggle around having kids. Does that make sense?
- Part of me thinks alternate reality scenes can be fun, but talking about what you know felt much richer and easier.
- No problem solving to start scenes.
What I would like from Gather.
In the two shows we have done so far, there was a lot of chaos, and I often felt lost in the scenes. Especially the group scenes.
I would like to see scenes where the dialogue has an opportunity to develop and characters can develop. I do like how we are pretty good and weaving various scenes together, but I would like them to go to crazy town.
I don’t want to say this to the rest of the team (except Athreya), but I wonder if the way our shows have gone, have we made it unlikely that we get invited to participate in other shows?
I guess I’d like to feel some hope at the end of the performance that we have a possible future moving forward.
